Mr. Derek Johnston Principal
Mr. Johnston has been a middle school and high school teacher for 9 years, as well as,a football, basketball and track coach for most of his career. His degrees come from
Boise State University. With his bachelor’s degree in history and social studies. He is originally from Tacoma Washington, but calls Idaho home.
He has taught World History and Geography along with US History and intro to Law Enforcement. He is a founder of the first innovation school in Idaho and credits the
experience as “a life changing opportunity”. He has traveled to twelve innovation schools across the US from Oakland to Philadelphia experiencing the inner cities of
these major metropolitan areas.
He has training in Big Picture Learning, Project Based Learning, Trauma Compassionate schools, along with School Poverty training. He attributes strong
family and teacher influences that motivated him through adolescence towards his overall development. Looking ahead at his Cassia experience he says, "I look
forward to ensuring student success, collaborating with families, educators and engaging with the community as a whole. I also seek to surface and alleviate the
challenges faced by students at Mountain View Elementary. Through education, I believe we can give students the opportunity to live healthy and productive lives that
exceed all expectations."
When he is not at school, he enjoys laughing, hiking, reading, singing karaoke and spending time with family. He is also a big Tampa Bay Buccaneers fan and loves
the BSU Broncos.
