Welcome to DJHS Track, Coach Harper!
A second track coach has been hired! Coach Harper ran cross-country and track at the University of Utah and a few of her accomplishments include running a 5:03 mile, a 17:06 5,000 m, and completing the 2018 Boston Marathon! She has a Bachelor's of Science degree in Mathematics with a minor in Health Promotion and Education. She is also a new mom with a 6 month old!
We should have enough students to hire at least one if not two more coaches and are still in need of help with field events, both throwing and jumping. If you know of anyone who might be interested, please have them contact Coach Cole at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Join DJHS Track & Field!
Read and do the following to be ready for the first day of Track & Field practice on Monday, March 16, 2020 @ 3:15pm!
Join The Remind Group
Sign up for important updates from the coaches, including changes to the schedule and bus return times. You can use the app to contact the coaches if you need to let them know that your athlete will be missing a practice. Messages from the coaches can be to either the whole group or private. Your messages to the coaches are private and seen only by the coach.
Coaches will use the app to notify you of exact return times after the meets so you do not end up waiting at the school.
If you have a smartphone, download the app and get push notifications. Open a web browser on your phone and go to rmd.at/djhstrack. Follow instructions. If you would prefer text notifications, text the message @djhstrack to either 81010 or (208) 514-2032.
Pay to Play
A $35 'pay to participate' fee will be assessed to each participant for one sport, an additional $10 for a second sport ($45 total) and an additional $10 for the third sport ($55 total). There is no additional fee for a fourth sport. This should be paid to Mrs. Fox in the JH office by the end of the day on Monday, March 30, 2020.
Get A Uniform (T-shirts)
Athletes compete in gray track t-shirts and black bottoms. T-shirts can be purchased from Mrs. Fox in the JH office for $8.00. Athletes provide their own bottoms, which can range from shorts to tights to sweats depending on the weather. Students may race in other school shirts, such as the Declo Pride T-shirts or Declo Cross-Country T-shirts. Participation in sports costs a lot, we don't want the added cost of uniforms to make it too expensive to participate.
Athletes who wish to buy an optional matching track hoodie may do so. Size and payment must be given to Coach Cole by 9:00 AM on Friday, March 20, 2020. The cost is $20.00 for a hoodie or $25.00 for a hoodie with athlete last name. Make checks payable to Declo Jr High School.
A current physical is required to participate in school athletics. Physicals are good for two years. Athletes should get a new physical during their 6th, 7th, 9th, and 11th grades. Please turn in physicals to Coach Cole by the end of practice on Monday, March 30, 2020.
Plan Your Participation
Track is a great sport because the activities and competition in which athletes engage are something ANY person can participate in throughout their lives. The goals of DJHS Track are to introduce students to the sport, help them learn and develop track and field skills and the physical fitness that comes from participation, and to make it an enjoyable, although sometimes tired and sweaty, experience for everyone involved. Athletes are expected to attend all practices and meets, however, coaches will work with individuals to address participation conflicts as needed. Parents should look at the practice and meet calendar and let Coach Cole know in writing as soon as possible of times when athletes cannot participate in practices or meets due to conflicting activities.
Running in Practice
To build healthy athletes, we strengthen, stretch, move dynamically, and run in every practice. All athletes will run in practice, both sprints and longer distances. Athletes with varying levels of fitness will be given varying levels of running workouts so that all athletes will be successful. A growth mindset is fostered, students may not 'be' sprinters or distance runners, but they can and will improve both these skills through practice.
Monday Early Release
Monday practices start at 3:15, just like every other day. There will be supervised study halls set up for athletes who stay on campus after Monday early releases, and if they remain on campus, they are expected to attend these study halls.
Track & Field Meets
Participation at meets is a privilege that students earn through good grades and practice attendance and participation. Each athlete is expected to participate in at least three and no more than four events at each meet. At least one event must be a running event and at least one must be a field event. Athletes get to choose their events the week prior to the meet.
- Attend and be on time to practices/meets
- Listen when coaches are coaching
- Do the assigned workouts/meet events
